“Let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food” was advised by Hippocrates over millennia ago. It’s still true today that “you are what you eat”. Herbs are staging a comeback and in the present days herbal products represent safety and security as compared to synthetic drug which leads toward research in herbal medicines. As we stand in the 21st century, we must challenge ourselves to critically examine the ingrained beliefs, habits and old institutions of health care. What has worked should be kept and what has not should be discarded or improved and optimal health that is effective, safe, accessible and affordable should become the priority of every country’s health care system. Many useful properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, antibacterial, and astringent action have been found in several plants and their parts. There is an urgent need for documentation of indigenous knowledge as they are in danger of dying with old generation. Therefore, more in vivo and in vitro investigations in a standardized manner are needed to fill the gap in the information that we have regarding the potential use of herbal-based products in dentistry.
