The contribution of livestock in generating employment and alleviating the problem of nutritional insecurity is tremendous. It is a well-known fact that Animal products and byproducts particularly milk and its processed products are easily available sources of good quality proteins for humans, besides being cheap. However India although having quite a large population of bovines is far behind the developed countries in productivity especially in terms of milk production. Apart from any other reasons, the lack of awareness among farmers and dairy entrepreneurs regarding scientific breeding, feeding, housing and disease management have been important reasons for this dismal position.
It is a matter of great pleasure that a comprehensive farmers centric handbook covering all the dimensions of scientific and profitable dairy farming has been compiled by the authors with great efforts. I am sure the handbook could be great help and a source of guidance to the farmers in general and our educated unemployed youth in particular interested in dairy farming as an enterprise. I congratulate the authors and appreciate their efforts in compiling and bringing out the useful information in the form of a handbook.
