Alice Munro is a renowned Canadian woman short story writer. With her remarkable writing ability, she has gained millions of reviewers, critics, and followers and she is considered as a master of contemporary short story till today. Her works are most popular and also translated into many other languages.

The book has four sections: The History of Short Story: An Overview, Complicated Relationships, Intra and Internal Relationships and Conclusion: Survival of Relationships. The introduction section gives an overview of the history of short story along with an introduction to the renowned writer Alice Munro with a synopsis of her short story collections. Alice Munro’s first collection Dance of the Happy Shades was published in 1968 and won the Governor General’s Award, the highest literary prize in Canada. The second section is titled “Complicated Relationships.” It is critically discussed all fifteen stories in the collection The Dance of the Happy Shades wherein the different shades of the characters in terms of their relationships are displayed in each story. This part probes into the intricacies in human relationships in terms of Difficult Daughters and Distanced Mothers, Ignored Relationships and Silent Sufferers. It shows the protagonist’s complicated relationships with family, siblings, friends, and neighbors.

The third section focused on “Intra and Internal Relationships” in Dear Life, which is Munro’s last collection. This part has critically discussed fourteen short stories. It throws light on narrator’s Relationships with others and how they face their self-conflict. It also discusses the unnamed protagonist’s internal struggle and explores the protagonist’s passion for liberty, uncontrolled and detachable relationship with their parents and others, Isolated and Alienated Narrators and Estranged Relationships. These stories take us through a journey into the lives of the characters through Munro’s exquisite use of imagery, metaphors and paradoxes.

The final and fourth part concluded, highlighting the survival of relationships in all Munro’s discussed works and gives a laconic description of the book. It is noted that the gradual development of the writer is observed through the very first and last phases of her writings. The main objective of the book is achieved as it probes questions of complexities in human relations and miscommunication between family members.
