GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS IS THE PROSPECTIVE PROTECTOR OF WEAVERS, FARMERS AND LOCAL TRADERS. With the introduction of GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS OF GOODS ACT 1999 in India, a lot of government entities have advocated for registration of Geographical goods to be registered under GI TAGS, providing a ray of hope to communities that things would change for good.
This research briefly introduces you to the concepts of GIs and its evolution history and it’s working in India. The advantages as well as various problems faced by the producers post the registration process. The impact of GI is analysed on social , economic and cultural factors.
This research highlights even though having GI TAGS product like THE BANARASI SAREE AND PASHMINA SILK face hardship due to disadvantage like lack of quality control, genericide. There are also successful GI TAG like THE DARJEELING TEA.
