As she breaks down these myths and stereotypes, she dissolves boundaries between people of different backgrounds, communities, ages, and even distant worlds.
She emphasizes the need for a change of attitude of general people, especially where women are not treated as equals. It is a complicated problem, to change the popular belief that a strong woman is a negative character. A strong woman who is earning and carving a niche for herself in the outside world is a great asset to her family and community. Divakaruni talks about contemporary women who are challenging the regressive social norms. They overcome all obstacles to materialize their dreams.
As an Indian woman, I sense a great affinity with Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s characters. She can keep the readers in the iron grip of her words. A reader is spellbound by her poetic language and is transported to her world of myth, fantasy and reality. It is the terrain of her unique imagination that fascinates the readers and tempts them to embark on an exciting journey with her.
