Edible oil is the main component of the human diet; soya is primarily a high nutrition, Soybean oil is a main cooking oil in India; it is available at low cost, little cholesterol and has a greater nutritional value than other oils. Oilseed crops are grown all over the world, India is a major producer of oilseeds.
The book covers the trends in Area, Production, Productivity and marketing of Soya bean, socio-economic condition of the selected farmers in the study area. This book is brought out by dint of hard research work for the academic degree. So it gives a bird’s eye view on the oilseeds scenario particularly the soybean area, production and marketing in Karnataka and Dharwad district. Further, case study focusing more on the socio-economic features of selected soya bean farmers, its effect on changing cropping pattern. The study also analyzed the constraints on soya bean production with the help of Garrett’s ranking approach. The marketing of soya bean is done through APMC. The total cultivated area and production of oil seeds in Karnataka and India is increasing. However, domestic consumption of soya oil is more than the production. Hence, India imports soya from the rest of the world. As a result of this, prices of other oils such as groundnut, sunflower, and safflower have increased. The highest human labour, bullock labour and machinery in ploughing is used in harvesting, the highest respondents were had primary and secondary school level of education.
The findings and suggestions are more useful to the government, farmers and policy makers. In spite of the above, soya bean growing farmers expressed the various economic and social problems, marketing problems including cost of cultivation and the use of HYV seeds.
