The Unani system of medicine as the name suggests has its origin in Greece
(Unan) and it is believed to be approximately 2500 years old. The foundation of
Unani Medicine was laid down by Hippocrates (Buqrat—460-375 BC), the
father of medicine. The doctrine of Hippocrates was modified by Aristotle or
(Arastu—384-322 BC) and Galen (Jalinus—131-210 AD). The famous and
learned Arab and Persian scholars of their time like Rhazes (Abu Bakar
Mohammed Bin Zakariya Razi—865-920 AD), Ali Bin Suhail Bin Rabban
Tabari—850 AD, Ali Bin Abbas Bin Majusi—944 AD, Avicenna (Abu AlHussain Ibn Abdullah Bin Sina—980-1037) and Abelcasus (Abul Qasim Khalf
Ibn Abbas Az-Zohrawi—990 AD) have elaborated and developed the healing
practice, opened new vistas and presented it in the form of a complete science.
The medical tradition of medieval Islam was introduced to India by the 13th
century with the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate and took its own course of
development during the Mughal Empire, influenced by Indian medical
teachings of Sushruta and Charaka.Alauddin Khilji (d. 1316) had several
eminent physicians (Hakims) at his royal courts. This royal patronage meant the
development of Unani practice in India, but also of Unani literature with the aid
of Indian Ayurveda physicians.
