Calcutta Traffic Police: Notes on Primary Sources

The ‘City in History’ always lets us enquire about its various aspects, and tries to enrich its study from different angles. Such an enquiry also encourages us to look for a new viewpoint to study its features. Especially, the urge to look for a stress- free society in Calcutta was a constant dream to us. Our society, that is, Kaikhali Jibandisha, an organisation for spreading awareness on road traffic, pollution and health among different corners of our milieu, has always ventured to search for making a happy, amiable society and we believe that such a mentality should always be the primary outlook for living in a human society. Such an urge for making a stress- free society, basically, on roads with its traffic, initiated the author of this book who is also the President of KAIKHALI JIBANDISHA, to do research studies on his own on the role of Calcutta traffic police, an important organisation, which has also done a lot for maintaining the onward journey of Calcutta. This is an important item for urban studies for studying Calcutta. But such an interesting subject for studying Calcutta was so long unexplored. Scholars had ignored its importance for so long. In such a challenging perspective, the author has a pioneering role to play in studying this subject and he has already published two books, one in Bengali and one in English, on the subject of Calcutta Traffic Police, which is gradually being circulated. Nevertheless, this new theme of urban study is going to be an interesting topic for the future scholars. With such a hope for future studies on Calcutta traffic police, the author thinks that as a pioneering role in this study, he has an important part to play in its circulation. That is why, he has attempted this detailed book on the primary sources of such a study. There are various centres in Calcutta where these sources can be obtained and searched further. Materials from outside Kolkata have also been outlined. Added advantage for such a note is its advice to see other sources more aptly.
